Moving to Helsinki: A Complete Planning Guide for a Stress-Free Move

How to Plan a Stress-Free Long-Distance Move with Oneco Movers - Oneco Movers

Helsinki is a city of stairwells, narrow inner courtyards and lease dates that all seem to land on the same Saturday. If you have ever tried to carry a three-seater sofa up to a fourth-floor flat in Kallio in August, you already know that moving here has its own particular rhythm.

The good news: almost everything that goes wrong on moving day is predictable. Below is a realistic plan for moving to Helsinki — whether you are arriving from abroad, moving in from another part of Finland, or just shifting two districts over.

Start with the date, not the boxes

In Finland, most leases begin and end at the turn of the month. That means the last weekend of any month is busy, and the last weekend of May, June and July is the closest thing Helsinki has to moving chaos. Students arriving for the autumn term add another wave in August.

If your dates are flexible, a mid-month weekday move is quieter, easier to book and often cheaper. If they are not flexible, book everything — truck, help, lift, parking — four to six weeks ahead. During peak weeks, good companies are fully booked well in advance.

    Sort the boring paperwork early

Three things need attention before the move itself:

Change of address. File a notification of move with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) and Posti. The official notification can be made from a week before the move and must be filed within a week of moving. A single form covers both the population register and mail forwarding.

Housing company rules. Most Helsinki buildings are run by a housing company (taloyhtiö) with its own rules: quiet hours, whether the lift can be used for furniture, whether stairwell doors can be propped open, and whether you need to notify the property manager (isännöitsijä) in advance. Ask before moving day, not on it.

Street space for the truck. In central Helsinki you often cannot simply park a 6-metre van outside the door. The city grants temporary permits to reserve a parking space or a short stretch of street for a move. Apply well ahead — this is one of the most common last-minute panics in the inner city.

Be honest about what the building will allow

Helsinki’s older housing stock is beautiful and completely unsympathetic to furniture. Buildings in Punavuori, Kruununhaka and Töölö frequently have no lift, or a lift the size of a phone box with a wooden door that opens inward. Stairwells turn tightly. Wardrobes get stuck.

Before you commit to keeping that heavy oak dresser, measure:

    • the narrowest point of the stairwell turn
    • the lift’s internal depth and door width
    • the width of your own doorframes at both ends
    • the distance from the truck’s parking spot to the front door

If something clearly will not fit, your options are to dismantle it, hoist it through a balcony or window with proper equipment, or let it go. Professional crews deal with all three — but they need to know beforehand so the right gear is on the truck.

Decide how much help you actually need

Doing it yourself with a rented van and friends works when you are moving a studio, have ground-floor or lift access at both ends, and the furniture is flat-pack. Add a piano, a sixth-floor walk-up, a tight schedule or a partner who cannot lift, and the calculation changes fast.

Most people land somewhere in the middle: they pack their own boxes and hire a crew for the heavy items and the transport. When you start comparing providers, search under the Finnish term rather than the English one — local companies and their service pages are indexed under muuttopalvelu Helsinki, and that is where you will find the firms that actually operate in the metropolitan area rather than nationwide brokers.

One thing worth checking while you compare: household work bought from a registered company is generally eligible for Finland’s household tax deduction (kotitalousvähennys), which can take a meaningful bite out of the labour portion of your bill. The rates and caps change from year to year, so confirm the current figures on vero.fi before budgeting around it.

Pack in the order you will unpack

A few habits that save hours at the other end:

    • Label by destination room, not by contents. “Kitchen” gets the box to the right place; “plates, mugs, sieve” does not.
    • Keep boxes under 15 kg. Books in small boxes, duvets in big ones — not the reverse.
    • Pack a first-night bag. Bedding, towels, phone chargers, toilet paper, coffee, basic tools, medication. This is the difference between a rough first night and a fine one.
    • Photograph cable setups before unplugging the TV and router.
    • Empty the fridge and freezer at least 24 hours ahead and leave the door open to defrost. A wet freezer in a moving van is a memorable mistake.

Plan for what you are not taking

Helsinki makes it easy to get rid of things responsibly. Usable furniture, clothes and kitchenware can go to a recycling centre (kierrätyskeskus), which will sometimes collect larger items. Broken furniture, electronics and construction waste go to an HSY Sortti station. Between the two, you can clear a flat without leaving a sofa in the stairwell for the property manager to find.

Start this two weeks out, not on moving day. Every item you discard is an item nobody has to carry down four flights.

    The week of the move

    • Confirm the truck, crew and arrival window in writing
    • Confirm the parking permit and place the signage if required
    • Book the lift for your time slot if the building requires it
    • Tell your neighbours — a note in the stairwell buys a lot of goodwill
    • Charge everything and withdraw a little cash for parking or tips
    • Do a final walkthrough: cupboards above head height, the storage cage in the basement, the balcony, the sauna shelf

    After you arrive

Give yourself the first evening to make beds and find the coffee. Then, in the first week: register the address changes that DVV does not cover automatically (bank, insurance, employer, subscriptions), get the keys to your basement storage, find out where the recycling points and the jätekatos are, and check that your home insurance covers the new address at the correct square metres.

Moving in Helsinki is rarely elegant, but it is entirely manageable when the stairwell, the truck and the calendar are all agreed in advance. Do the boring parts early and the day itself becomes just a long day of lifting — which is exactly what it should be.

    FAQ

When should I book a mover in Helsinki? Four to six weeks ahead for month-end and summer dates. Mid-month weekdays can often be booked with two weeks’ notice.

Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in central Helsinki? In most inner-city locations, yes — the city issues temporary permits to reserve street space for moves. Apply in advance.

What is the cheapest month to move in Helsinki? Generally the winter months, and any mid-month date. Demand and prices both peak between June and August.

How long does a typical two-bedroom move take? With a professional crew, usually four to six hours door to door within Helsinki, depending on stairs, lift access and distance.
